If You Work From Home, You Don’t Need Pants! Happy ‘Working Naked Day’!

If you thought those late-January days on the calendar were bare, then Feb. 1 is the full Monty. Today, in case you weren’t aware, is now officially known as “Working Naked Day.”

With more Americans working from home, the need for a spiffy new business suit has fallen the way of job benefits and co-workers you can complain to each day about your spouse, your kids and your neighbors.

There is one big benefit to working from your kitchen table or living room couch: You can wear whatever you want … or nothing at all.

With so many Americans working from home, doing your job is becoming a clothing-optional event.

That’s what inspired Dallas business consultant Lisa Kanarek to create a holiday in 2010 where home-bound workers can drop trou and celebrate.

Last year, after Chase’s Calendar of Events listed Working Naked Day, a number of stay-at-homes took to social networking sites to announce their nudity, and at least one woman posted a nude photo of herself from her home office.

The holiday is “dedicated to those who are working from home ‘naked’ — stripped of the resources that millions take for granted in the traditional corporate workplace,” according to Chase’s Calendar of Events.

Kanarek, who has worked out of her home for the past 20 years, is happy to have people interpret Working Naked Day however they like.

“Let’s have fun,” Kanarek told AOL News. “We work at home, and there isn’t anyone there with us, so we can work naked, literally and figuratively.”

Though she uses the word “naked” as a metaphor, she believes that there’s a stigma attached to remote workers, and that the embarrassment and shame they occasionally feel is very real.

“When I first started my business and first started working from home,” Kanarek said, “I was ashamed of it. I never told anyone that’s what I did.”

Over time, though, she came to realize it was a case of the grass being greener on the other side.

“If you’re working from home, it’s OK,” she said. “Don’t be embarrassed. There are so many people who’d rather be working from home.”

Tina Marie Hilton, a 47-year-old remote office assistant who has been working out of her home for the past three years, has never been embarrassed to say where she works. She attributes the weak economy, which has spurred a groundswell in people working from home.

“I’ve never had anyone look down at me at a network event because I work out of my home,” the Hickory, N.C., resident said in an interview with AOL News. “Over the last three years, remote working has really blossomed, so I haven’t run into any type of issues like that.”

While Hilton concedes that working from home can be lonely and intimidating, she plans to forgo the who nudity thing.

“I don’t think I’d go that far,” she said. “But I might take my slippers off.”

Others, however, plan to free themselves of clothes just as they freed themselves of the office.

“At first, I thought no, but now I think, ‘Why the hell not?’” said Laura Milligan, 26, a home-based education marketer from Houston. “I might do it out of solidarity, for all the other home workers out there.”

She added, however, that she’ll have a robe ready, in case the UPS guy comes by.

“The big fluffy kind,” she stressed. “Not the slinky kind.”

Though working naked is something of a novelty for most people, it’s just another day at the office for the folks at the American Association for Nude Recreation, the largest nudism advocacy group in the United States.

Would you dare to bare it all on a New Jersey beach?

“I was a little hesitant at first. As soon as I got here it was like ‘I’m just gonna bare it all,’” said first-time nudist Lorray Bradbury of Marlton, New Jersey.

The young blond was a rarity as one of the few out of thousands at Gunnison Beach in Sandy Hook, New Jersey still sporting tan lines.

Throughout the United States and Canada, an estimated 10,000 nudists skinny dipped at the same time.

Friends of Gunnison (FoG), an advocacy group, was one of 127 chapters of the American Association for Nude Recreation that took part in the event. As the largest chapter, FoG put roughly 800 bare-buttocked members in the Atlantic Ocean.

FoG member Leo Falanga of Wrightstown, New Jersey exclaimed, “It’s wonderful. It’s the kind of event I think everybody should join.”

Why do it?

“The whole point of this is to bring naturism out to the public to show them that we’re normal people,” said FoG President Dale Distasio.

The current nude beach scene is more active than it has been in three decades — and impending changes have its members all roiled up: increased law enforcement at San Francisco’s North Baker Beach and the North Bay’s Muir Beach; the closure of most state beaches; a court ruling that could force some beach-goers to suit up; and a possible push to officially designate several Marin beaches as “clothing-optional.”

What’s spurring most of the latest developments? Increased visitation over the last year, for one, said Yvette Ruan, chief park ranger of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), who administers more than a dozen properties used by nudists.

As the economy has soured, people have been swapping longer, more expensive trips for stops at beaches. And more people on the sand means more auto break-ins, more cops, and, in some cases, more angry homeowners.

At North Baker Beach, visitors have noticed a jump this year in warnings for rude or illegal behavior being given by park police and rangers. “I’ve never seen it like this before,” says San Francisco TV installer Paul Jung, one of the site’s regular volleyball players. So far, however, the enforcement mostly has been limited to leading rowdies off the sand. GGNRA public affairs chief Rich Weidemean said that only one citation for sexual activity was issued there this year, and only three or four in the corridor from North Baker Beach to Golden Gate Bridge Beach.

There are also big changes happening at Little Beach, a nude area known to most readers as Muir Beach. At the cove, where only one citation for improper sexual conduct has been issued in the last year through June, deputies and rangers are starting to make periodic patrols — in contrast to the past, when they reacted only to calls, Also, warning signs are expected to be posted this summer in reaction to complaints.

Ironically, Marin County Sup. Steve Kinsey calls the summer-long increase in law enforcement visibility a “short term” test to determine if serious problems really are occurring at Muir. “I want to monitor the situation,” he said. If the cops find that things are actually pretty quiet on the sand, it might lead Kinsey to starting an effort to designate Muir and several other beaches, such as the north end of Bolinas, as clothing-optional.

In September 1975, the county enacted an ordinance giving it the power to exempt areas from anti-nudity laws, which make nudity a misdemeanor offense. But Marin has never used the exemption power. “It’s not something I want to do this year, but I wouldn’t have any hesitancy about bringing it forward,” Kinsey said. Asked if the other supervisors would back him, he responded, “I think everyone would go along with it.”

Residents who have complained want the opposite to happen. If law enforcement fails to reduce what a homeowner who refused to be identified told the Guardian is an outbreak of “lewd, disrespectful, exhibitionist, and intimidating behavior,” then complainants may seek to ban nudity at Muir Beach. “It has been tolerated, but it is illegal,” says the homeowner. “It’s not one or two or 10 or even 30 complainers. It’s a huge portion of the community. We’re done tolerating the intolerable.”

About 50 people, including Kinsey, Ruan, Marin Sheriff’s Lt. Cheryl Fisher, and Marin County District Attorney Ed Berberian, attended a community meeting June 16 to discuss complaints that ranged from public masturbation to urination. Muir Beach resident Laura Pandapas complained after a neighbor and her 3-year-old daughter saw a nude sunbather masturbating on the beach, according to the Marin Independent Journal. “This is a neighborhood beach, surrounded by homes, families, and children, and used by clothed families, not just naked people,” adds the anonymous homeowner. If they “want to freak freely and be seen … they should go to Red Rock.”

According to Kinsey, “some spot surveillance or reconnaissance” by deputies to check for problems will take place on “some of the more active (hot weather) days” this summer at Little Beach, which is run by the county, while they and rangers at the adjoining federally-owned public portion of Muir Beach, react to complaints. GGNRA’s Ruan already has ordered her rangers to “drive by more and, as time allows, get out of their vehicles and walk (along the sand) and talk to people.” But unless it’s an emergency or they’re asked by the county, law enforcement won’t be able to do much on Little Beach, which is outside their jurisdiction. But even that could change by January, when Ruan expects the state and federal government to okay a new enforcement-sharing agreement.

Meanwhile, on June 29, the 4th District Court of Appeals rebuffed sunbathing in the buff by ruling that a policy instructing rangers to ignore nudity on state beaches where nudity has been traditionally practiced is invalid because it was adopted without public feedback. The strategy, known as the “Cahill policy,” was issued by then-state parks Director Russell Cahill in 1979. The Naturist Action Committee will probably appeal the case to the state Supreme Court, according to attorney Allen Baylis, who represents the naturists.

It isn’t known yet whether the ruling applies just to Southern California’s San Onofre State Beach, around which the case revolved, or if it could lead to a ban on nudity at other state beaches such as Devil’s Slide near Pacifica. The outcome is “a bit unpredictable,” says Bay Area Naturists (BAN) leader Rich Pasco, who points out that, according to prior court decisions, California Administrative Code CCR 4322, which restricts nudity in state parks to designated areas, “includes areas ‘designated’ by traditional use.”

Also up in the air: how 220 state parks and beaches — including clothing-optional properties at Devil’s Slide, Mount Diablo’s Hidden Pond, Monterey’s Indian Head Beach, and even popular Red Rock (which is administered by Mount Tamalpais) — may be affected by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s threat to close them. A June 8 letter from National Park Service regional director Jonathan Jarvis to Schwarzenegger warned that the federal government could take possession of six former federal land sites, including the Ford Ord Dunes and Mount Diablo (Mount Tam has received federal funding in the past), if they are closed.

No matter what happens, though, there’s still time for some fun at clothing-optional areas this year. Want to get involved on a community level? Consider “adopting” Bonny Doon Beach on September 19 when supporters gather to clean up trash. (For directions, see the beach’s listing in Santa Cruz County.) You could also make history by helping set a world skinny-dipping record. The Guinness Book of World Records has agreed to create a new category for the most people simultaneously skinny-dipping, so the American Association of Nude Recreation is organizing an event at nude locations and AANR clubs throughout North America. Participation: free. Dress code: nothing. All you have to do is be present at the Sequoians Clothes-Free Club in Castro Valley July 11 at exactly noon, when an official count by notaries and three “witnesses” will occur.

A calendar featuring mystery nudes in scenes of Shetland life is set to raise £20,000 for charity.

Island photographer Ivan Hawick has persuaded anonymous locals to strip off to help the Clan (Cancer Link Aberdeen and North) 123 appeal.

He is already selling black and white postcards of island nudes to raise money, and is taking a daring new selection of colour images to use.

Orders are now being taken for a 2010 charity calendar.

Mr Hawick told the BBC Scotland news website: “A lot of people are affected by cancer and I have always liked the idea of helping. I thought a bit of nudity would help.

“I just asked local people and it was amazing how many people were willing to help.

“Part of the appeal of the calendar will be trying to guess who the people are, as they are in lovely scenery but without showing any faces.”

He explained: “It is a stealth mission getting some of the shots, early in the morning when daylight is just coming in, so the models are not seen.”

The overall fundraising aim is to raise £3m to build a new cancer support centre.

Whispering Pines may be the best kept secret in the Cape Fear region. It is off the beaten path, halfway between Ocean Isle Beach and Longwood. The folks there are excited about their attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest number of people simultaneously skinny dipping.

“The American Association for Nude Recreation has sanctioned this event for the 260+ clubs across the United States. It’s going to be July 11th at 3:00 p.m. Our gates will open at noon at Whispering Pines to register each participant,” said nudist Gloria Waryas.

Skinny-dipping is a wholesome tradition. It is as old as mankind and it is a common occurrence at Whispering Pines.

“It’s a lot of fun being a skinny dipper. It’s just freedom. Free of everything. You don’t have confinement of a bathing suit. Everyone is equal. You don’t have to worry about whose bathing suit looks better than yours,” said Carole Stogner Lawless.

Whispering Pines is a secluded resort. The swimming pool can only hold so many people – perhaps 150 or so. But there is a nearby pond, and those who skinny dip in it will be included in the record breaking attempt. Also, on that day, the public is welcome.

So consider yourself invited, but there are a few rules. If you choose to participate on July 11th, you can arrive fully clothed, but be prepared to bare all. After all, it is a nudist resort and you will get to be part of the Guinness Book of World Records.

The world record attempt on July 11th will mark the conclusion of Nude Recreation Week.

Naked hikers make riding the aerial tramway a real experience

UNTERWASSER, Switzerland — An aerial tramway company in eastern Switzerland is advertising its Alpine rides with a new scenic attraction: there’s a chance you might see a naked hiker.

Toggenburger Bergbahnen AG says that, apart from the usual breathtaking panorama and mountain wildlife, tourists might catch sight of ramblers wearing only hiking boots and socks.

The company released a new advertising campaign Thursday claiming that “mountain goats, eagles and maybe even a few naked hikers make riding the aerial tramway a real experience.”

The company’s campaign would find little favor in the neighboring canton (state) of Appenzell. Voters there passed a law in April banning naked hiking after dozens of nudists, mostly German, started rambling through their picturesque region.

Embracing Imperfection

Columnist Heidi Davoren is sick and tired of how the female breast is depicted in media.

Much pressure is placed on women to bounce back after pregnancy, but the reality is there’s very little bounce left. Despite what celebrity mums might tout about how they achieved their amazing shape two weeks after delivery, the fact is it’s physically impossible.

It’s about time we put a stop to unrealistic expectations and just got real. This week I am embracing imperfection.

The constant parade in magazines, television programs and movies of pumped-up, gravity-defying, perfectly shaped female breasts has set a standard in the mind’s eye of some sort of unattainable ideal that has nothing to do with how people really look.

If you are not a nudist or naturist and have gotten your perception of female breasts from Playboy magazine and pornography films, click here to see a gallery of non-sexual normal breasts.

Whenever a woman practices topfreedom, someone always makes the argument that the sight will be somehow harmful to children. In fact, the opposite is true – children are being harmed by being denied access to the sight of normal, nude human bodies.

Pedalpalooza, week one: Rounding up the bike fun

What an amazing week! Portland bike funnists have been outdoing themselves this year, with the biggest Pedalpaloozaever (over 200 events total!)

Team BikePortland has been scrambling trying to cover all the events we can (is this really our job or is it a dream?) — and reports and photos have been rolling in from the community, true to the DIY spirit of the event. Keep an eye on theShift list and the Pedalpalooza twitter account for live updates and discussion.

Below is a selection of reports, photos, rumors, and shout outs that we’ve come across in the past week, in rough chronological order. Share your own links and experiences in the comments.

Oh yeah, and be sure to check out our full Pedalpalooza 2009 coverage for more updates and stories, including a daily ride guide and all the ride reports we can get our hands on.

- Before it all began, for the creative and impatient, there was the Pedalpalooza Preview Ride.

- The Kickoff Parade was a good-natured, high-spirited blast — I counted 200 riders, and more were reported later on. Check out our report (including a slideshow and a video), the Bike Temple’s video, andphotos by Carye Bye.

The weekend kicked off with a bang on Friday.

- Jonathan took a tour of the city.

- I tried out unicycling in the rain with a couple dozen other folks.

- Our intern Dan Liu took photos and wrote a report of the Jesus Ride and the Midnight Mystery Ride (over 300 people were rumored to attend the latter).

Saturday was off the handle!

- Cirque du Cycling was a huge success, with record numbers attending (including about 70 naked riders from the Daytime World Naked Bike Ride).Here’s our full report. There are tons of photos out there — check out some by Dan Liu. Event organizers have set up a Flickr group as well.

- Speaking of the Daytime Nekkid Ride, leader Allan Folz reports that 78 jubilant riders were counted at the halfway point — and several more spontaneously disrobed and joined the ride on the way to the Cirque. - The World Naked Bike Ride. So much has been said and written about this that it’s hard to know where to link to. Here’s our report. Someone made three neat time-lapse slideshows. Jim Parsons took some photosand also posted his GPS trace from the ride. Here are some shots from one of our commenters. Every single spectator seemed to have a phone, camera, or camcorder. Google is your oyster here folks.

Sunday was a completely packed day.

- Organizers were thrilled by the turnout of 50 outer-eastside bike afficionados for the Lents Bike Boulevard Ride.

We learned about meditation
at the Dharma Rain Zen Center
on the Joy of Sects Ride.

- Around church-time, the Bike Temple’s Joy of Sects Ride toured various places of worship. Here’s their report, and here’s our slideshow.

- A small but hardy group met up in Beaverton for the Pirate Ride — a success, though “no one brought any rum, and in spite of all the left turns there wasn’t even any port.” Here’s the full report.

- 20 – 30 happy riders splashed around in public fountains while dancing to music from a mobile sound system. Carye Bye tells the story with photos.

- The CRC Protest Ride attracted 80 riders. Here’s our report, and here’s Chris Smith’s write-up on PortlandTransport.

- We’ve heard rumors that the I Heart Photobooths ride was well-attended and tons of fun, but awaiting confirmation and photo scans.

- The Grant Petersen ride seems best summed up thusly.

- The Hands-Free Derby was reportedly a blast.

Monday morning:

- The day was kicked off by the 9 intrepid sugar-loving hill-climbers who showed up for the Ridiculously Early Donut Ride.

- Romantics united in the rose gardens of Ladd’s for dramatic readings from paperback romance novels, accompanied by a roving trash trailer and a Batman mask.

- Anarchists and the anarcho-curious assembled briefly for a discussion of situationism before loosely scattering in various spontaneous directions to follow our emergent experiences on the Psychogeographical “Tour” of Portland.These photos tell the story of one of the several splinter groups. Rumor has it that another group turned up at a local bookstore to browse and buy Situationist texts. The rest may still be out there creating a new emotional map of the city.

- The Big Girls Ride was reported to be in trouble — the organizer had the flu. Any word on how/if that went?

- Apparently members of the Dandy Warhols joined in the Dandy Warhol ride on Monday night — who went on that?

How Green Is a Nudist Vacation?

With summer upon us, how many green vacationers’ fancies will turn to thoughts of nudism?

Going without clothes on beaches and other vacation spots is commonly called naturism — a description that implies helping the planet, as some practitioners claim to be doing.

Spending more time with nothing on stems waste and pollution in all sorts of ways, according to an article by Kathy Blanchard on The Naturist Society’s Web site.

“Living more hours naked each day results in a dramatic drop in my laundry, which in turn reduces my water and energy use (along with my related bills),”Ms. Blanchard wrote. “It also reduces the amount of soap I release, in my case, into the Puget Sound.”

She also advocates naturist holidays — staying close to home wherever possible, to cut down on fuel usage — but sometimes traveling to places where it is possible to leave the car behind and backpack or paddle naked into the wild.

“For those few days, we use virtually no fuel, our diet is minimal with low ecological impact, and we return healthier,” she wrote, adding that the “trips are coolly green clothes-free vacations.”

Where to go? France is already a top destination for “textilists” (a term some naturists use to describe clothes-wearers) but also seems to be one of the most appealing spots for vacationing in the buff. According to

the tourist authority in the Aquitaine region on the French Atlantic coast, “‘green’ naturism is growing fast in popularity.”

Of the 1.5 million people who practice naturism in France, nearly a third come to Aquitaine while “foreign naturists” account for more than half of holidaymakers in the centers and campsites across the region. (Presumably their fossil fuel use in transportation could cancel any climate benefits of going clothes-free.)

In the Swiss Alps, nude hiking in winter seems to be a growing phenomenon — although some locals are trying to outlaw the practice, as my colleagueJohn Tagliabue wrote earlier this year.

The prospect of winter raises another issue: for people going without clothes, global warming may have a fringe benefit. Michael Hewitt notes in an article in the article in The Independent that a few nudists seem happy that the demise of winter may be in the offing. However, others may side with groups like EcoNudes, which believes that living in the buff has “a positive effect on global warming, climate change and society.”
