A clothing-optional resort in Palm Springs known for a nude bridge that allows nude patrons to cross over Indian Canyon Drive without being seen in the buff will reopen Friday under new ownership.

The grand reopening of The Desert Sun Resort is set for 4 p.m. Friday, said owner Elizabeth Young.

“We bought it out of bankruptcy because we couldn’t bear to lose this beautiful place,” said Young, who noted she and her husband visited the resort for years when it was known as The Desert Shadows Inn Resort & Villas.

“We’ve been to nude resorts all over the world, and this is by far the best one,” she said.

She said rooms were quickly filling up with past patrons familiar with the property.

“We have guests coming from all over the world — Germany, Australia and Canada,” she said.

The nudist retreat, which has 32 rooms, 59 condos and 17 town homes is a special place where people can “relax in a stress-free environment,” said Young.

She said the resort’s pool, spa and restaurant have been renovated, and there’s also plush waterfalls and streams.

It’s a special place where people can “relax in a stress-free environment,” she said.

First-timers unfamiliar with clothing-optional resorts are also welcome, she added.

“Once they get here … they realize it’s no big deal and that not everyone is a super model,” Young said. “It’s a great place to come and reconnect with your husband, spouse or partner.”

Members of the Chamber of Commerce, Palm Springs Hospitality Association and the City Council are to attend the grand reopening.

“Palm Springs is known for its diversity and for having everything for everyone, and this has always been a great resort that we almost lost … so we’re thrilled to get it back,” said City Councilwoman Ginny Foat.

She said she expects the resort to increase tourism.

“This is just another option for people who want to come and stay in Palm Springs,” she said.

Rooms start at $145 a night. For more information, call the resort at  (760) 322-5800  or visit www.desertsunresort.com.

Larry Fleischman, self-proclaimed mayor of the section of beach that is open to nudity, relaxes at his favorite spot on Saturday afternoon.

No one at a Haulover Beach party on Saturday seemed embarrassed that nearly everyone showed up in the same outfit — their birthday suit.

The party was on Day 2 of a three-part celebration of the 17th anniversary of Haulover’s establishment as a ”clothing-optional” stretch of sand. It also marks a belated observance of National Nude Recreation Week. Festivities continue Sunday.

The activists who worked to get Miami-Dade County to allow them to swim without swimsuits were out in force to mark the occasion.

”We’ve seen so many people learn to enjoy the beach. It really does feel good,” said Shirley Mason, one of the early pioneers with the group South Florida Free Beaches that brought nude bathing to Haulover in July 1991.

Mason said she realized the county needed a nude beach when a doctor told her husband that sun and salt water may help treat his painful full-body psoriasis. But they had trouble finding a place to go.

After researching the law and working to raise awareness, Mason’s group succeeded in getting the county to designate several hundred yards of Haulover Beach as clothing optional.

But after all her work, on Saturday Mason was one of the only clothed people in sight. She said she had too much organizing to do outside the beach for the party to relax in the buff.

Almost everyone else on the crowded beach was stripped down to bare skin, lounging under umbrellas or soaking up rays for a line-free tan. A picnic, ice-cold margaritas and even a kiosk offering therapeutic massages were all part of the fun-in-the-sun festivities.

MORE ACCEPTING

Longtime beachgoers said they’ve seen the nude portion of the beach gain much more acceptance from the community over the years.

”You’d see big gangs of people from the textile [clothed] part of the beach come and yell — well, you can’t print it in the paper,” said Bruce McEachern of Fort Lauderdale about the beach’s early days.

He gave a long list of obscenities that clothed folks sometimes screamed at the naked, but said in the 15 years he’s been coming to Haulover, such verbal attacks have mostly stopped.

The biggest problem at the beach on Saturday was a family emergency that delayed the DJ from spinning tunes until after 2 p.m.

Annie Bernstein of Tamarac has been coming to Haulover Beach to shed her clothes and swim for 15 years. She said the beach has a more friendly atmosphere than its clothed counterparts, as she observed on a recent trip to a Fort Lauderdale beach with her 16-year-old stepdaughter.

WANDERING EYES

”Everyone was hitting on her — and that’s with a bathing suit on,” Bernstein said. “That doesn’t happen here.”

One reason for the friendly atmosphere is people like Miami resident Ed Christin, who said he’s been coming to Haulover once a week since 2002. He hands out cards with nude beach etiquette rules to people who are rude.

”It’s OK to look at beauty, just don’t stare,” he said. Most people are too embarrassed to keep up their ogling once Christin gives out a card, but he admits a few bad apples persist.

Standing nude under the broiling Florida sun, Christin sighed: “Some people, they have no shame.”

Florida’s Nude & Clothing-Optional Guide

The Bare Truth About Florida’s Beaches and Resorts

By Dawn Henthorn, About.com

Footprints in SandCompliments of FlaUSA.com
Florida can no longer cover up the naked truth. Nude and clothing-optional resorts are taking off.Alright, so I’m having a little fun with puns, but the truth of the matter is, that according to James Thorner of the St. Petersburg Times, one Florida county is gaining “status as the North American Capital of Nudism.” That county – Pasco – just north of Tampa does have more than its share of residents and visitors willing expose themselves.

Going au’ naturel is nothing new… it was a common practice back in the time of the early Olympic games in Greece. Gymnos – Greek for naked – was how these athletes trained and competed. But, with the demise of the ancient civilizations and the beginning of a religion that stressed the sinfulness of sensuality, nudism was on the decline and body shame began its rise.

Organized nudity became the fashion in the early Twentieth Century in Germany as a way of shedding the too-tight collars for less restrictive clothing. After World War II, the idea caught on as international tourism took hold. Today it is a world-wide practice, although not always widely accepted.

Certainly Florida’s mild temperatures creates the perfect climate for optional clothing opportunities, even if Florida Law casts an uneven shadow on the conduct.

According to FloridaNaturist.org, “inappropriate” dress is a crime in Brevard County due to a swimwear ordinance. As a matter of fact, at the out-of-the-way, but traditionally nude Federal Beach, a Brazilian tourist was arrested for wearing a French-cut bikini. Yet, along the same coastline two hundred miles to the south, Miami-Dade County operates a legal clothing-optional beach, where any given weekend, a thousand or more totally nude men, women and children frolic in the surf and sun.

Perhaps it is the irregular distribution and enforcement of nudity laws that is driving naturists to private nude and clothing-optional resorts and clubs creating a surge in their popularity. Resorts and clubs sit on private property which usually obtain land-use permits allowing the lifestyle.

Even so, The Naturist Journal reports that even private property owners are at risk. Last spring, Eddie and Suzy Colosimo opened their six-acre property to visiting bikers during Daytona Beach’s annual Bike Week. The Colosimo’s allowed their guests to roam nude on the property. That created a stir within the county, who slapped them with a cease-and-desist order. It’s a land-use issue that may play out in court.

Like other controversial issues, this one may never go away. Nude and clothing-optional proponents may forever be locked into a battle with those that make and enforce the laws that govern the use of public facilities and seek to limit freedom of private land use.

So, bare if you dare while you’re in Florida, but be sure to check local laws wherever you go.

Peru wants jail for nude woman using flag as saddle

    Thu Jul 24, 2008 9:57am EDT

LIMA (Reuters) – A naked model photographed using Peru’s flag as a saddle while mounted on a horse will face charges that could put her in jail for up to four years for offending patriotic symbols, the country’s defense minister said on Wednesday.

The suggestive shot of Leysi Suarez, whose main job is dancing for the band Alma Bella, or Beautiful Soul, was splashed on the cover of DFarandula magazine and has caused a political uproar as Peru prepares to celebrate the 187th anniversary of its independence from Spain on Monday.

“These are patriotic symbols that demand total respect, and using them improperly requires punishment,” Defense Minister Antero Flores told reporters. “This is an offense.”

Flores has ordered a public prosecutor to take up the case and file charges.

Suarez said it was patriotic to pose for the photo.

“I haven’t committed a crime. I love Peru and show it with my body and soul,” the dancer said on RPP radio.

Mario Amoretti, a well-known lawyer, said it depends in part on how Peru’s red-and-white flag was used.

“It’s one thing to cover your body with the flag, but quite another thing to be naked and using it as a horse’s saddle,” he said.

The photos were republished on the Web site of Peru’s El Comercio newspaper: here

Actas International sues Caliente resorts for unpaid bills

LAND O’LAKES          –         Caliente sued by telecom firm for unpaid bills

A Tampa telecommunications equipment company sued Caliente Resorts Tuesday for $15,711.95 in unpaid services. Matthew J. Jowanna, an attorney for Actas International, claimed breach of contract, saying the nudist resort did not pay for a new telephone system Actas installed at the resort’s Dominican Republic branch in 2006, as well as support and maintenance services. Caliente spokeswoman Angye Fox said the resort has no comment on ongoing litigation.

Would French nude snobs ban Tortuga?

    24 07 2008

    PARIS (Reuters) -

France’s data protection authority has given permission for a nudist resort to keep a “black list” of guests barred from its facilities,
    the organization said.

The Rene Oltra nudist center in southern France was obliged to seek permission after a person complained of being denied a reservation,
the authority said on its website.

French law requires organizations to seek authorization to keep lists
of individuals denied use of their services.

Contacted by Reuters, the resort declined to give further details regarding individual’s exclusion from its site.

The centre’s rules require guests to abide by its “naturist ethic” of nudity at all times, weather permitting, and bans upsetting other guests or failing to observe hygiene standards.

“But nudity is not exhibitionism. Any indecent behavior will be sanctioned by immediate exclusion,” the rules say.

LONDON – Ogilvy has released a humorous ad for Comfort, depicting a nudist betrayed by his wife.

     Comfort…new ad by Ogilvy

The spot follows a nudist recounting a traumatic experience with a naturist marriage guidance counsellor.

In a flashback, the nudist returns home to find his wife and best friend fully clothed, sniffing each other’s woollens. The brief was to convey the message that Comfort makes your clothes so soft and fragrant that even naturists are now changing their minds.

It finishes with the strapline: “Makes Clothes Irresistible”.

Topless sunning and nudity draw police; 79 arrested

(07-15) 04:00 PDT Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Westerners were getting too racy on the beaches of this Persian Gulf tourist haven, and a police crackdown on topless sunbathing, nudity and other indecent behavior has resulted in 79 arrests in recent days.

Undercover officers are strolling the sand while others stand guard in new watchtowers to enforce the social mores of this Muslim city-state, a booming business center that is attracting growing hordes of foreign tourists.

Authorities said they began the decency campaign after police detained a British man and a woman who were allegedly having sex on one of Dubai’s beaches this month.

Over the past two weeks, police have detained a total of 79 people whose behavior was “disturbing families enjoying the beach,” Zuhair Haroun, a spokesman for Dubai’s Criminal Investigation Department, said Monday.

First offenders may be issued a warning, but if caught twice, tourists could be referred to the public prosecutor and face the possibility of criminal charges, authorities said.

Thousands of European and Asian expatriates live and work in Dubai, where native Emiratis make up only about 20 percent of the estimated 1.2 million residents. Shopping malls and fast-food restaurants have replaced traditional Arab houses, and English has overtaken Arabic as the United Arab Emirates’ lingua franca.

Many Emiratis and Arabs visiting from other Persian Gulf countries increasingly feel that Dubai’s ambition to become a cosmopolitan metropolis and tourist destination is overrunning their own traditions and contradict what they feel is culturally acceptable.

Unlike elsewhere in the conservative region, tourists in Dubai are often seen wearing bikinis on public beaches and walking the streets in shorts. Alcohol is freely available in hotel bars and restaurants in this regional businesses and entertainment hub.

Although it is pursuing the police crackdown, Dubai has embarked on a public awareness campaign to remind its Western visitors and foreign residents that the city may have flashy hotels and glitzy skyscrapers, but it also is a Muslim country with traditionally conservative values.

The city is installing signs warning tourists in Arabic, English and several other languages not to sunbathe topless or change clothes in public, said Abdullah Mohammed Rafia, an official with the Dubai Municipality whose office is overseeing the public awareness campaign.

Authorities are “taking action in response to numerous complaints” filed by people who visit the city’s beaches, Rafia said. Complaints have ranged from families “offended by displays of nudity” to female sunbathers who say groups of men stare at them while at the beach.

The police campaign also will target people who harass beachgoers with acts “deemed offensive, immoral or disrespectful,” including loitering and voyeurism, said Dubai’s acting police chief, Maj. Gen. Khamis Mattar al-Mazeina.

Some tourists who were enjoying Dubai’s simmering sun Monday said the new campaign left them confused about what is considered appropriate in Dubai.

“I understand that I have to respect the rules of the country,” said John MacLean, a British tourist on vacation with his girlfriend. But, he added, “I am not sure if I can kiss her or touch her in public.”

     BREAKING NEWS -

Caliente removed from American Association for Nude Recreation

    on July 14 2008
    By Marcia Stone
    Pasco Naturally Editor

KISSIMMEE – The end of Caliente Resort’s membership in a nationally recognized association came with a brief e-mail from Caliente’s Steve Dorsey: “Please accept this as the official resignation of our charter.”

The $50 million resort had been temporarily suspended during an investigation about its participation or association with swingers’ parties and recreation, including SwingFest 2008.

The American Association for Nude Recreation, the oldest, largest and most credible organization supporting social family nude recreation, has removed Caliente Resort of Land O’ Lakes, from its organization.

This action was taken following the temporary suspension of the club’s charter because of marketing practices inconsistent with AANR’s principles and standards. In a letter to its clubs dated July 11, AANR reaffirmed its expectations of clubs holding an AANR charter. And Caliente responded by relinquishing their affiliation.

The break-off is a troubling one for hundreds of Caliente homeowners, property owners and thousands members and visitors who look to AANR as a seal of approval of established business standards in the nudist world.

Doug Butler, president of the Caliente Homeowners Association, wrote a straightforward President’s Letter that outlined what legal options property owners had to oppose swingers or sexually oriented events that Caliente management might endorse or participate in.

“Your board has been using for the past year and a half: quiet diplomacy. The board does not want litigation nor was that ever the intent when we met with our attorney, nor is it in any of our plans and wishes. We went for advice on how to best handle the ‘lifestyle’ situation at Caliente.”

“We regret that it was necessary to issue the suspension that led to where we are today,” said John Kinman, AANR President. “Caliente is a beautiful resort, and AANR was a strong force behind its initial development and growth. However, no club is more important than the principles we have advocated for over three quarters of a century.”

The Caliente charter came under investigation when the club registered to have a booth at an adult trade show, Swingfest 2008.

“This is entirely counter to AANR’s advocacy of social family nude recreation and its rejection of any attempt to associate its good name and reputation with sexually exploitive purposes. Club management offered some concessions, but their PR Director is still scheduled to lead a workshop advocating co-existence between swingers and nudists,” said an AANR statement.

“As a husband, father of four and an employee of the Association, this is not a message I could accept,” said Erich Schuttauf, AANR’s Executive Director. “AANR clubs represent the best in healthy clothes-free living and recreation, for all ages.”

Response to the removal of Caliente Resort from AANR membership has surprised local nudists:

–Doug Lynch, a Caliente homeowner, said, “Caliente, a jewel of a resort, is unlike anywhere else on earth. Caliente has AANR values in its filings at Pasco County. It’s not about whether the behavior is appropriate or even about sexuality. Residents and Caliente signed papers to this effect. The By Laws of Caliente Master Association Board of Directors filed with Pasco County say, ‘Caliente is a nudist resort and a nudist residential community, wholesome, (with a) friendly atmosphere conducive to nude recreation. We distinguish between nudity and sex and keep the two in their proper perspectives. The nudist aspect shall not be subject to amendment, change or modification,’” he said.

–Paul Brenot, President, PANDAbare.org, says, “I’m sure that such a decision was made after much deliberation by the principals of Caliente, LLC.”

“PANDAbare.org believes in the ideals of AANR. Our mission is to promote our culture and build a responsible network and partnership with the non-naturist residential, business and governmental segments of our beautiful Pasco,” he said.

“Caliente’s decision to leave AANR was made with what Caliente felt was in their best interest. PANDA will not knee-jerk react to this, but we will see what directions Caliente decides to pursue. Caliente’s future actions will speak louder then any rumor or gossip.

“By letting the dust settle, PANDA will then be able to act with clarity. Like I stated before, this was an issue between the national organization and one of its members. Caliente has now decided to go it alone. We wish them well,” he said.

“The residential naturists who own and/or live in Caliente and those naturist members of Caliente Resort who believe in the ideals of AANR and PANDA are welcome to join and participate in PANDA,” he said.

The Pasco Area Nudist Development Association is a grassroots, all volunteer non-profit group to promote nudism for residents and visitors in a wholesome way in Pasco. It was formed early this year.

AANR has been an aggressive advocate for nude recreation rights and a strong promoter of public education. “When we speak to legislators or contribute to positive mainstream media recognition including the New York Times, Today Show, Time Magazine, and others, they know AANR has earned the reputation as the credible voice for nude recreation,” said Schuttauf.

AANR’s mission is to advocate nudity and nude recreation in appropriate settings, and educate and inform society of the value and enjoyment of such through on-going member growth. It is the credible voice of reason, representing the millions of people who enjoy clothes-free recreation and ‘nakationing’ throughout North America.

You can find more information in next week’s Pasco Naturally, delivered by Wednesday, July 23 to all nudist communities and Land O’ Lakes-Lutz area businesses.

For further information on nude recreation and the associations affiliated clubs, contact AANR at 1-800-TRY-NUDE or visit the association’s website at www.aanr.com.
